Nagpur: Of the 60 major plastic waste generator cities, Nagpur stands at 16th in the country and third in the state, shows the data of Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Two cities of the state — Mumbai and Pune — are among the top 10 cities of the country in terms of plastic waste generation.
The board recently directed the states and Union territories to step up actions so that the country can meet its 2022 goal. Following a study conducted in 60 major cities of India, the Center had set the target of eliminating single-use plastics by 2022.
The study covers data for 2010-12 period, based on which CPCB last year estimated countrywide data. Nagpur generated 45.96 tonnes of plastic waste per day. The data further shows that plastic waste constitutes 7% of the city’s total municipal solid waste.
Though the quantity of plastic waste generated in Mumbai is the highest, the percentage of plastic waste is less than Nagpur. Next to Mumbai is Pune which generated 101.35 tonnes of plastic waste per day.
Apart from this, Nashik generated 20.38 tonnes of plastic waste per day. Overall, the four major cities of the state generated around 576 tonnes of plastic waste per day.
Recently, state environment minister Ramdas Kadam had claimed that the daily generation of plastic waste in Maharashtra has reduced by 50% post the statewide ban on plastic which came into force in June last year.
However, in CPCB’s latest annual report on Plastic Waste Management Rules for the year 2017-18, Maharashtra failed to provide any information regarding estimated plastic waste generation, collection, segregation and disposal facilities, number of violations and action taken and other important aspects.
The report has recommended local bodies to ensure establishment of source segregation at household level. It further directed the bodies to constitute squads to check illegal manufacturing, stocking and sale of the banned plastic bags.
The 2016-17 annual report stated that Maharashtra generated approximately 1,285 tonnes of plastic waste during the fiscal.
In June last year, TOI did an analysis of CPCB’s annual reports in implementation of Plastic Waste Management Rules from 2011 to 2016. According to the reports, over 50% of the states in the country failed in acting on plastic waste management during the six years. Moreover, over 80% of the states did not constitute the mandatory state-level advisory (SLA) body which was to monitor the implementation on plastic waste norms.
