Commercial fishing continues in Singanallur lake
tnn | Jan 25, 2019, 00:18 ISTCoimbatore: Despite ban on commercial fishing at Singanallur lake in place since January 1, fishermen continued their fishing activities even as corporation commissioner K Vijayakarthikeyan was present at the lake on Thursday.
The commissioner took part in the inaugural function of the ‘Jadav Aranya’, a programme to plant saplings on the banks of Singanallur lake under the Miyawaki method.
While the function was going on, fishermen were found fishing in the lake in more than three coracles and fishes were being caught for commercial purpose.
While the activists had been crying hoarse that the fishermen are using the lake as a mere fish tank by breeding and catching exotic fishes with no breeding season, the corporation who is the owner of the lake, has not initiated any action.
When contacted, the commissioner said the corporation would be filing a police complaint against the violators. TNN
