Vadodara: Caught driving on wrong side thrice in the city? Be prepared to give up your driving license.
The traffic police department has decided to launch an aggressive campaign to rein in rash and errant drivers.

Those driving on the wrong side and speedily on the city roads will be on target of the cops. In fact, the traffic police have already suspended driving licenses of 210 Barodians last year.

“We began cracking down on errant drivers several months ago and this year we will intensify the drive. Those caught driving on the wrong side of the road or in high speed will be penalized and their driving license will be suspended immediately,” said Anupam Singh Gahlaut, city police commissioner.

“If the same person is caught committing traffic offence like driving on the wrong side for then his or her license will be cancelled,” Gahlaut told TOI.

He added that if the same person is caught committing traffic offence thrice then his or her license will be cancelled for a stipulated period. “The person won’t be able to drive and he or she will have to get fresh license from the regional transport office (RTO). If people want to keep their driving license, then they will have to follow all the driving rules,” he said.

According to the Motor Vehicles Act, driving license of those involved in fatal accident may be suspended for six months while in other accidents license suspended up to three months.

Driving license of those involved in fatal accident will also be suspended. The decision was taken during the Road Safety Council’s meeting held on Thursday by Gahlaut.

The commissioner has also decided to start cracking down on the companies whose employees flout traffic rules. “I have the power to penalize the firms up to Rs 25,000. We will first warn the companies and then start penalizing,” he added.

Cops in civil dress to keep vigil

Police have decided to field traffic cops in civil clothes in some areas of the city. “Usually, commuters speed up their vehicles or take U-turn on seeing cops in uniform. This may lead to accidents too. So cops will be fielded in civil dress in some busy areas,” said Anupam Singh Gahlaut, city police commissioner.
