India thrash New Zealand in first ODI

India bowled out hosts New Zealand for just 157 and then chased down their target with ease, winning the first of five ODIs by eight wickets.

Mohammed Shami picked up three wickets on his way to becoming the fastest Indian to 100 ODI wickets and Kuldeep Yadav finished with four wickets as the Indian bowlers restricted the Kiwis after they had elected to bat first.

Fierce sun halted play during India’s innings and the match was reduced to 49 overs with the target revised to 156, but there was never any doubt of India reaching the target. Shikhar Dhawan top-scored for the visitors with an unbeaten 75.

Pliskova stuns Serena, faces Osaka in semis

Karolina Pliskova was trailing Serena Williams 1-5 in the third and final set and Williams was one point away from serving out the match when she had a 40-30 lead in the game.

Pliskova staved off that match point and three more that followed later in the match as she staged a remarkable comeback to win the match 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.

There was no such drama for Naomi Osaka, who cruised past Elina Svitolina 6-4, 6-1 to reach the Australian Open semi-finals.

In the men’s section, Lucas Pouille got the better of Milos Raonic 7-6 (7/4), 6-3, 6-7 (2/7), 6-4 to reach the last four stage of a Grand Slam for the first time.
