IBM Beats Earnings Expectations Although Its Revenue Again Declines
Revenue drops 3.5%, but company swings to a profit for the quarter
International Business Machines Corp. said revenue fell 3.5% in the fourth quarter, another setback in its yearslong quest to recapture growth, but its signal that faster-growing businesses would help boost profit this year sent shares higher.
IBM’s stock jumped more than 6% after hours, driven in part by the company’s outlook for 2019. It expects adjusted per-share earnings of $13.90, compared with $13.81 for the prior year. IBM doesn’t provide a forecast for revenue.
