COIMBATORE: More than 2,090 members of Joint Action Council of Tamil Nadu Teachers Organisations and Government Employees Organisation (Jacto-Geo) were detained by the Coimbatore police for staging road blockade at multiple places in the district on Wednesday.

On the second day of their indefinite strike, government employees and school teachers staged road blockade at eight major junctions including Mettupalayam bus stand, Perur tahsildar office, Kinathukedavu bus stand and Sulur bus stand, thus causing huge traffic congestion.

“The number of employees and officials participating in the strike has increased considerably. Even though the number of members participating in the blockade is only little above 5,000, most of the members did not go to their work to support the strike,” said VM Michaelraj, district coordinator of JACTO-GEO.

The strike affected most of the government schools, especially government elementary schools, across the district and the employees at taluk offices, revenue department and district administration remained empty as around 56 government teacher associations and around 100 government employees unions participated in the strike.
