KAJAL CHATTERJEE, KOLKATA
“ALLIANCE of looters”! Oh, what a language in a democratic country; that too coming from someone holding a top constitutional post! In any society which claims to be civilised and law-abiding, judiciary is supposed to deliver the last word in respect of any controversy. So if indeed somebody or some groups are accused of committing any loot then the final judgment must come from the court of justice. The accuser cannot act as the self-declared judge and utter whatever he wishes. And what are the credentials of the “looters”! Somebody’s party has been elected by the voters of Delhi. Similarly others have been voted to power by the people of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. One of the “looters” is none other than the leader of the largest Opposition party in Lok Sabha! Is this the way the stalwarts need to be maligned in a civilised society! What message does the man wants to convey to the new generation through this crude language? If mere accusation of corruption is synonymous to conviction then let the institution of judiciary be immediately done away with. Also the people should necessarily believe that all the accused leaders in Vyapam scam in Madhya Pradesh are indeed culprits! And why not also believe that there was necessarily an unholy nexus between Lalit Modi and an Union cabinet minister as well as a former chief minister! Let us all believe about the accusations against the Who’s Who about lending tacit support to the 2002 Gujarat pogrom or the Ishrat Jahan murder. And let us allow time to tell whether majority of the electorate would vote for this “alliance of looters” assembled in Brigade Parade Ground Kolkata or in favour of those “nationalists” whose “good days” have been marked by the supreme intolerance to dissent, the murders committed by cow vigilantes, the annihilation of secular rationalists, the rabid cry of Ram temple, the torture against minorities and Dalits, the shameless polarisation and saffronisation of education, and the promotion of superstition and myths in the name of scientific research.
