India is country of 130 crore population and its 28.6 per cent people are in the grip of drug addiction. It is also established fact India is country of young population and by the year 2022 India will be world’s top nation of young population. It will be the country of highest number of youths.
But the alarming question and situation what it is going to be with the growing number of youth affected and addicted by the drug intake. Such drug addict people are burden and liability on the nation and not asset of being young. The drug addicts are weak in mind and body and many serious ailments like Tuberculosis and AIDS.
Right now there should be a massive national policy and campaign to rescue this growing number of people by de-addiction programme.
According to the Global Adult Tobacco Survey report out of 28.6 per cent people of Indian drug affected population 18.4 per cent are using tobacco and its related items Cigarette, Bidi, Khaini, Bettle, Opium, Ganja and other intoxicants. These stuffs are causing damage to liver and lungs.
The fast food and junk food habits have reached upto rural populations on all the food stalls. Only fast and junk food available nutritious food are not available even if one wants to have it. Drug and Hukka points are drug intake have become craze that is generating false scene of adventure and of being modern.
The State of Punjab is in severe grip of drug menace. A Bollywood film “Udta Punjab” highlighted this problem as calamity of Punjab. In the last 11 years the per capita liquor consumption in India has doubled.
Eleven year back the per capita liquor consumption in India was three liters and now it is 6 liter per person. Among Indian youth the consumption of tobacco, liquor and drugs are increasing with fast pace. About 35 per cent people of India are having addiction to intake of fast food.
According to the Indian Journal of Public Health 14 per cent of school going children are having health problem of obesity due to high consumption of fast and junk food. In the changing life style and urban living people are not taking enough sleep that body require. The work load, pressure of education and system of giving homework in all subjects by different teachers strain in relations, tensions and other factors have become severe and serious health hazard.
Youths are spending more time on watching moves in cinema halls or on television and late night parties. All these factors are cause of increase in diabetes in India and it is openly said that in coming years there will be highest number of diabetic cases in India than in the whole world.
We are going to be nation or highest number of youth but of what type?
