With bright colours and the impeccable precision of geometric lines, tribal paintings that describe stories of their rituals, festivals and their ecosystem are out on display now in the city.
Muria, Gond, Warli, Saora, Bhil, Pithora and Kurumba paintings of several artists from states including Odisha, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradhesh have been exhibited by The Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India (Trifed) at the C.P. Art Centre.
From canvas to tussar silk, the artists have used every medium to paint.
For instance, Saora paintings from Odisha are done on plywood canvas, tussar silk or cotton cloth.
S.P. Sudalai, regional manager of Trifed, said, “Originally these artists would paint on the walls of houses there, in case of an auspicious occasion like a festival or a wedding. The paintings tell tales of their routine or rituals or agriculture.”
They are priced between ₹2,000 and ₹10,000. The exhibition is on till January 27.
