BENGALURU: As many as 16 people, including six children, had a miraculous escape after the three-storey building they live in tilted in the wee hours of Wednesday at Chamundi Nagar near RT Nagar.

The incident triggered panic in the locality where buildings stand cheek by jowl as locals feared the tilted structure could land on their houses.

Muneer Hussain, a vulcanization shop owner who resides on the ground floor of the building with his two children and wife, said, “Around 3am, vessels started flying off the shelves in our kitchen, waking us up. I rushed to see what had happened. Within seconds, the floor tiles began to crack and I rushed out with my wife and sons.” Muneer said he had paid Rs 6 lakh as advance to the owner and pays a monthly rent of Rs 2,000.

Jolted out of their sleep, residents of other storeys too rushed out in time. Neighbours feared the building may crash and demanded that the tilting structure be demolished. Owner of the building, AS Mulla, agreed to their demand.

Maula, a realtor, bought the building for Rs 35 lakh two years ago. “I have no other option but to demolish it. We are just waiting for the tenants to shift their valuables and other materials, after which we will begin the process,” he said. Mulla claimed he is the fourth buyer of the building, which was constructed around 10 years ago.

Despite the building having tilted, residents were seen getting in and out of their houses to bring out their belongings. Neighbours have provided them shelter and food for now.

Usmaan, 24, who lives on the first floor, said, “The building stands on a 15ft x 40 ft plot. Two days ago, a neighbouring site owner started digging his plot to lay a foundation.” Fire department personnel arrived at the spot and asked the owner of the neighbouring plot, also 15ft x40ft, to fill up the trench.

Muneer alleged that the building which tilted had a 2-ft deep foundation, and the high groundwater table had flooded the base. RT Nagar police said no complaint has been registered as the building owner has agreed to demolish the building.
