AMETHI: A group of farmers from Shahgarh area of Amethi staged a demonstration in Gauriganj against the Congress Party ahead of Rahul Gandhi's arrival here on Wednesday. The farmers were protesting against the party's failure to restart the Samrat Cycle factory.
According to a local, Piyush Singh, the district administration had acquired the land for Samrat Cycle factory in 1984. As per the arrangement, the factory was to give jobs to farmers who gave away their land.
The factory started and some of the farmers got a job as well. However, the factory was closed in 1988-89. In 2010-11, the owners of Samrat Cycle auctioned the land and its assets which were procured by Rajiv Gandhi Mahila Trust.
This gave the farmers a ray of hope that the factory would restart but it did not. Annoyed over the delay, the farmers had been protesting against the Congress Party.
On Wednesday, raising anti-Rahul Gandhi slogans, the aggrieved farmers said they should either be given their land back or be given a job.
"Rahul Gandhi had promised us that the factory would start but it has not. He seems to have no intention of returning our land but we will not let that happen," said Sanjay Singh who led the agitating group.
