A fake call on Tuesday afternoon to convince his business partner about a robbery of ₹1.2 crore landed a Paharganj businessman in jail after the police failed to be convinced by his narrative.
The man, Amit Jain would be charged under sections of providing fake information to the police.
The incident came to fore when the police received a call about a robbery near Hanuman temple near Jhandewalan on Tuesday morning. The call, just ahead of the Republic Day, sent the police into a tizzy. Teams from the local police and the Crime Branch were rushed to the scene.
No records
When the cops reached, Mr. Jain claimed that his employee was travelling to his business partner’s house to deliver the money when he was waylaid and robbed by three gunmen.
The CCTV footage from the area were scanned but no such incident was recorded in them.
The police also checked the location of the employee and it was found that he was no where near the place of the incident.
The employee indicated the role of Mr. Jain during questioning.
Accused confesses
When Mr. Jain was confronted, he broke down and confessed to have made the fake call.
During interrogation, he told the police that he owed ₹1.2 crore to his partner, but did not want to pay the money to him immediately. The partners owned a pharmaceutical business together in Karol Bagh.
He approached his business partner on Tuesday and claimed that the money was robbed from the employee while he was on his way.
FIR to prove claims
They also agreed to share the loss together, but his partner asked for an FIR to prove the claims. Following this, he hatched a plan with his employee to call the police and narrate the story about a robbery.
The police say that actions under appropriate sections of the IPC would be taken against the businessman.
