Mildura resident Naomi Cocks told Daily Mail Australia that while residents in the region were used to high temperatures, things had changed over the years.
'To what it was like years ago it is drier and hotter now,' she said.
'I work in a 100 year old building and it can get very hot but we always stay open.
'We actually find we can do better business the hotter it is, whether its because people don't want to cook in the heat or whatever.'
Cafes and smaller businesses were shutting up shop early with the streets being all but bare after 2pm on the hottest days, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Operators of the Mildura Dockside Cafe took to social media to show how the extreme heat was capable of cooking a steak inside of a car.
'At 11am I put a porterhouse steak in my car which was parked in the shade and left it until 4 pm.. It was very well done upon my return,' Dockside Cafe manager Lacey Hateley wrote.
Ms Hateley also shared a caution along with the images.
'With this heatwave please remember never to leave children, elderly or animals in the car,' she wrote.
'Always check on elderly neighbours, ensure your pets have a way to keep cool and cool drinking water.'
