VIJAYAWADA: According to the data presented by the Andhra Pradesh Student Amenities System, nearly 19.3 percent of the schools in the state lack water supply and about 6 percent schools do not have electricity. The data also reveals that 46.5 percent of the schools lack proper student furniture and 70 percent of the schools do not have staff rooms.
The data is based on the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) survey of 2016-17. Both government and private schools are included in the survey and includes information on critical infrastructure facilities including toilets, playgrounds, library and staff rooms in the schools.
It is Anantapur district which has a severe lack of water supply facility like handpumps, tap water, wells or other water sources. About 36.3 percent of the schools do not have their own water supply facility. It is also noteworthy that no district in the state has a 100 percent of its schools supplied with water and the state average is only 80.7 percent.

Similarly, the electricity supply is also not provided to all schools in the state. While Visakhapatnam has the least coverage, with only 77.7 percent of the schools connected with power supply, Prakasam district has the maximum schools, 99.2 percent, empowered with electricity supply.
Another basic infrastructure facility of boundary wall is also not built for 58.5 percent of the schools. Srikakulam district has only 26.7 percent of schools with boundary walls, the lowest in the state and Nellore district has the maximum number of schools, about 49.5 percent of them, with boundary wall.
The condition is equally bad when the furniture, both for students and teachers in the schools in the state is concerned. While only 10.6 percent of the schools have enough student furniture, including a desk or table, in Anantapur, the least in the state, West Godavari has the highest number of schools, about 48.5 percent of them, with student furniture.
A general lack of proper perspective among the government officials in improving the government schools is the main reason for the poor state of the schools, especially the government schools, said KS Lakshman Rao, educationist and former MLC.
"The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan funds are being utilised for other less important things when the priority should be given to providing basic infrastructure to the schools," he added.
