SURAT: Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) hopes to get Rs 80 crore funding from central government for its ambitious Rs 110 crore bio-diversity park project. This funding is likely to come from union ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA) under its City Challenge Fund for Smart Cities. A presentation to this regard was made by SMC to MoHUA on Monday at Delhi.
SMC had planned the park in 6lakh sq m area within the city limits.
In creating this urban forest with 85 different species of tree, the civic body plans to plant one lakh trees on both sides of Gandhi Kutir bridge to Althan and to Bhimrad bridge. A natural forest course with ponds, jungle trail and informal forest gardens is being developed in the area.
Phase I of the project has commenced with development of green belt and natural water course and will be completed in next eight months. There will also be a conservation area, oxygen corner, children’s play area, walk way and uneven surfaced garden area.
More than 30 adopted species of trees will become native species in Surat in the next two years. There will also be another 35 to 40 species of native species of trees which includes exotic, aromatic, ornamental and other types of plants.
Rajesh Pandya, deputy municipal commissioner, SMC said, “We will attempt and create an urban jungle in the midst of the city. Even the water bodies will be kept on natural form for rain water collection.”
