Los Angeles — The nominees for the 91st annual Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday.
From box office hits including BlackKklansman, Black Panther and Roma; to award-winning performances including Olivia Colman, Lady Gaga and Mahershala Ali – this year’s Oscars are full of surprise contenders and history makers.

Alfonso Cuaron, nominated for best director for Roma
“Cinema needs the opportunity to be diverse. What mainstream cinema and the theatrical experience has lacked in general is diversity. And I’m talking about diversity in terms of stories and characters and ways of doing films,” the director said via aphone interview.
Spike Lee, nominated for best director for BlackKlansman
“Thirty years is a long time, ain’t it?” the director said via a phone interview about his first Oscar nomination as director in a three-decade career.

Willem Dafoe, nominated for best actor for At Eternity's Gate
“It feels great. I’m still freezing my butt off,” Willem - who is in Canada filming the Disney sled-dog movie Togo - said in a phone interview.
Adam McKay, nominated for best director for Vice
“The subject matter we’re talking about is a very unpleasant time in history, and we did it with an unusual style in storytelling. We knew it was going to be polarising, but we felt like it was in a good way,” Adam said in a phone interview.
Hannah Beachler, nominated for production design for Black Panther
Hannah is the first African-American to be nominated for production design. She told the Associated Press in a phone interview: “To break down a wall like that, to be your ancestors’ wildest dreams, to show other young women of colour and boys and girls that you can do whatever you want no matter what struggles you have in your life — all of that. That’s what it means to me.”
Rami Malek, nominated for best actor for Bohemian Rhapsody
“I have absolutely treasured playing Freddie Mercury and I am so profoundly humbled and thrilled to honour him this way,” the actor wrote in a tweet.

Jimmy Chin, nominated for best documentary feature for Free Solo
“We always felt that if Alex was able to climb up El Capitan without a rope and succeed — that for us is always going to be the win already,” Jimmy, co-director the nominated documentary about Alex Honnold becoming the first to climb Yosemite’s El Capitan without ropes said via a phone interview.
Ruth E. Carter, nominated for costume designer for Black Panther
“No one is saying I don’t have a chance. They’re saying you have a chance. The women who I’m going against are top level. The top of the heap. To be there and give them a run for their money, I’m totally stoked.”
Barry Jenkins, nominated for best adapted screenplay for If Beale Street Could Talk
The director gave a shout to those involved and nominated for the film including “queen” Regina King, who is nominated for best supporting actress.

Pawel Pawlikoski, nominated for best director for Cold War
Receiving the news straight off a flight, Pawl said: “I was flying into Warsaw when they were announcing the nominees. When I landed, I got bombarded by messages, a nice way to arrive.”
Yalitza Aparicio, nominated for best actress for Roma
— “As a daughter of a domestic worker and an indigenous woman myself, I am proud this movie will help those of us who feel invisible be seen,” Yalitza said in an emailed statement.

Nadine Labaki, nominated for best foreign language film for Capernaum
Director, Nadone Labaki said in a phone interview: “It’s a national pride. Lebanon doesn’t have a real cinema industry in the real sense of the term. With our first nominee last year and this one this year, it’s a big step.”
Sam Rockwell, nominated for best supporting actor for Vice
“Hot damn!” is all Sam could exclaim in a email statement to the Associated Press.
Richared E. Grant, nominated for best supporting actor for Can You Ever Forgive Me
Expressing his excitement about his nod in a video on Twitter, Grant said: “I'm absolutely overwhelmed... I cannot believe 36 years later, I'm standing here as an almost 62-year-old man having Oscar nomination!”
