Two dead after car plunges into river near Kempsey

Two people are dead after a car plunged into a river on the state's Mid North Coast on Wednesday morning.

Police were told the vehicle was travelling on Croads Esplanade, Smithtown, about 15 kilometres north-east of Kempsey, when it left the road and went into the Macleay River just after 11am.

It's believed the vehicle was attempting a U-turn when it left the road.

A rescue operation was launched involving Mid North Coast police, NSW Police Marine Area Command officers, Marine Rescue and Maritime NSW, with divers flown in by helicopter from Sydney to comb the river for the vehicle and its passengers.

Shortly before 5pm, divers located and removed the bodies of a man and woman inside the submerged sedan.

The operation will continue to salvage the vehicle. Forensic police are on the scene.
