AMETHI: Regional players such as the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) may not have taken the Congress on board in Uttar Pradesh but the grand old party's national president Rahul Gandhi said that he was ready to cooperate with them.
Speaking to reporters in Amethi on Wednesday, Rahul said: "I respect Mayawati and Akhilesh Ji very much. There are a lost of similarities in our ideologies ... our fight is also against BJP... And we are ready to cooperate with them as much as possible."
Earlier on January 12, the Congress said it will contest on all 80 parliamentary seats in UP after the SP and BSP forged an alliance without the Rahul Gandhi-led party.
Congress national general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad had said that the alliance will work in the interest of the party.
"In an alliance, we would have contested elections on 20-25 seats but now we will contest elections on all seats," he had said in Lucknow on January 13.
The SP-BSP combine however left the seats of Amethi and Rae Bareli for the Congress. Thereafter, the Congress started looking for tie-ups with smaller parties.
Sources revealed that the Congress would most probably field 60-65 candidates in UP and leave the remaining seats for the allies.
