KOLKATA: A day before Nobel laureate Venkatraman Ramakrishnan is scheduled to address the audience at Presidency University, vice-chancellor Anuradha Lohia on Monday appealed to the students who have been on an indefinite hunger strike to call off the protest. Sources said the VC made the appeal as she prepared to enter the main administrative building.

Seven students have been on a hunger strike, protesting against the suspension of three of their peers for the semester.

The agitating students have been camping in the portico of the main building where they organized a sit-in last year to protest against the delay in the renovation of Hindu Hostel. The convocation was finally shifted out of campus.

Sources added that the students have not responded to the appeal and the hunger strike was likely to continue.

"With a Nobel laureate visiting the campus, student politics should take a back seat as the prestige of this glorious institute should be upheld," said a teacher. tnn
