The Madurai city police on Monday booked seven accused in a murder case for allegedly threatening an eye witness during an identification parade in the presence of a Judicial Magistrate inside Palayamkottai Central Prison.

P. Kamal Karuppu alias Karuppiah, a resident of Government Colony in Pykkara, was murdered on October 21, 2018, for which seven members were arrested by Sellur police and lodged in Palayamkottai Central Prison.

On November 20, 2018, Karuppiah’s sister P. Krishnaveni and her relative Vellaichamy were taken to the prison to identify the accused. Even as the identification parade was in progress in front of a Judicial Magistrate, the seven accused allegedly hurled verbal abuse at her and threatened to murder her and her family members when they come out of prison.

Fearing that her family would be worried, she apparently did not report the incident immediately to her family. Her mother, hearing the issue from Krishnaveni on Sunday, insisted on filing a police complaint, according to the FIR.

Based on Krishnaveni’s complaint, Sellur police registered a case under various sections of Indian Penal Code and Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act against the seven persons — ‘Pillaiyar’ Prabhu, ‘Chutti’ Muneesh, ‘Nari’ Vignesh, Arjun, Muthuraman, Subeer Ali and Vethalam alias Vetrivel.
