BHUBANESWAR: First-time voters will play a significant role in the elections as there are over 5.45 lakh voters in the age group of 18 to 19 years, according to the final voters list for 2019 released by the chief electoral officer here on Monday.
In the last voters’ list, the number of young voters in the age group of 18 to 19 years was 1,33,896 while in the latest list 4,11,505 new voters have been included. The total number of first-time voters has touched 5,45,401, said chief electoral officer Surendra Kumar.
The total number of voters in the state is 3,18,00,787 including 1,63,37,310 men and 1,54,60,545 women.
The gender ratio in the voters’ list is 946 females per 1,000 male voters. Besides, there are 2,932 third gender voters in Odisha. For the first time 1,90,037 persons with disabilities (PWD) have been listed.
“The correction of voters’ list is on and will continue till 10 days before the last day of nomination. So the number may increase by that time,” he added.
The total number of booths in the state has increased from 35,896 to 37, 606 this year. Accordding to the Election Commission of India’s guideline, a voters’ booth will be set up for every 1,200 voters in rural areas and every 1,400 voters in urban areas. In 333 booths the number of voters has crossed the prescribed limit so auxiliary booths will be set up in consultation with the EC, Kumar said.
The electoral registration officers have identified 9,02,972 demographically similar entries (DSE), which included all absent, shifted, dead, and repeat entries after analysis of ERONET database. Of which, 2,97,323 cases have been noticed as doubtful and matching cases while rest are flagged as non-DSE. After proper verification 1,80,391 cases have been excluded from the voters’ list and rest have been corrected as repeat or shifted voters. “Our objective is to reduce the DSE voters’ list to the minimum,” said Kumar.
Voters can call on tollfree number 1950 and go to Voter Sahayata Kendras to be opened at district, block and tehsil levels. The EC has also asked the state government to rationalise or transfer employees posted at one place for more than three years before the elections.
He added that this year being an election year the National Voters Day will be observed in a grand manner on January 25. A voters carnival will go around the city creating awareness among voters with various information through song and music. Besides, a cycle rally will be organised.
