Ola Café is stepping up to care for the furloughed federal workers who have been without a paycheck for weeks due to the government shutdown.

Federal workers can receive a free breakfast sandwich and coffee at Ola Café in East Somerville Monday through Friday mornings.

“When he came into work on Monday, my boss [owner Gus DaCunha] said he’d had the idea to offer free breakfast after visiting family in New Jersey,” said Gabby Trudeau, Special Projects Coordinator for Ola Café. “There are places all over New Jersey, and some in Boston, that are doing it, and we think it’s really cool to be a part of it, and to do whatever we can.”

Ola Café has a small storefront on Broadway, but they do quite a bit out of the little space, offering full breakfast and lunch as well as a full espresso menu.

“We are just thinking about these people who have been without a paycheck and work for about a month now,” said Trudeau. “It’s not about us, it’s just about picking the right thing to do, and it feels like the right thing to do even as a small business.”

Business owner DaCunha is from Portugal, and came here when he was a boy. Trudeau considers DaCunha and the business one in the same, in a way.

“He tries to use it as a business and a ministry,” she said. “ He has a super big commitment to keeping things as affordable as possible in this lower socioeconomic area, and he does a lot of stuff to support local organizations, like donate pastries to libraries and elder care facilities. He is committed to really co-existing with community.”
