PATNA: The Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) will establish one vending zone each in all its 75 wards soon.
Instructions in this regard were issued by municipal commissioner Anupam Kumar Suman at a meeting held under his chairmanship at the PMC headquarters last week.
The civic body has already initiated bidding process for setting up 14 permanent vending zones in Patna for giving organized space to local vendors to sell their products. At present, four major vending zones are operational in the city at Sheikhpura near J D Women’s College, Kadamkuan, Boring Canal Road and Patna GPO near Budh Marg.
“This step is being taken to remove unauthorized roadside settlements which lead to traffic congestion and pollution in the area,” a PMC official told this newspaper on Monday.
Besides, a survey of street food vendors will be conducted by city mission managers (CMM) appointed under the Smart City project and identity cards issued to all of them at a function christened ‘Shahari Samriddhi Utsav’ to be held from February 1 to 15.
“We have issued at least 2,000 identity cards to small vendors. The CMMs will coordinate with ward councillors and vending zone heads to verify the authenticity of the cards,” additional municipal commissioner D P Tiwari said.
Chief secretary Deepak Kumar has already claimed that a survey of roadside eateries in the city was being conducted to cover them with either glass shields or plastic sheets.
“As per the government order, food items being sold in the open have to be properly covered to maintain hygiene and quality of the food products. The PMC will initiate bidding process for hiring an agency which will provide covers to the sellers,” the PMC official said.
