The lawmakers of the Island have decided on this new fee as they consider it will help pay for environmental projects and cultural preservation.
The bosses of Bali administration have drafted a new by-law on the levy, as per the Straits Times.
It stated that the tax could be collected at the airport or added to the airline ticket.
Bali Governor Wayan Koster explained that he thinks tourists will understand this new implementation.
“They will be happy to pay it as it will be used to strengthen our environment and culture,” he said
In spite of attracting millions of tourists every year- 1.5m Aussies visited Indonesia in 2017 – the waters around the Bali Island are extremely polluted.
Last year, a video made by a diver swimming in a soup of plastic off a Bali went viral.
Brit Rich Horner made the video at the well-known dive sites like, Manta Point, off the island of Nusa Penida, 30 minutes from Bali by boat.
“Plastic bags, plastic bottles, plastic cups, plastic sheets, plastic buckets, plastic sachets, plastic straws, plastic, plastic, so much plastic,” he said.
The inundation later on was cleared from those particular spots.
The island ever since has banned single use plastic.
In March 2017, Indonesia promised up to $1 billion annual reduction of plastic and other waste products polluting its waters.
