NAVI MUMBAI: Nature lovers and green activists will be holding a colourful 'Run For Flamingos' along the Palm Beach Road on next Sunday, February 3, to raise awareness about the need to protect and preserve the wetlands as well as the wetland birds like flamingos.

"All citizens are requested to participate in huge numbers for the 10-km- and 5-km 'Run For Flamingos' at Palm Beach Road. The green, scenic beauty of the mangroves and wetlands, next to this road, further adds to the pleasure of free running, even as the birds like flamingos, gulls, terns hang out in these parts.

"The larger message that we want to share through this lovely run is that it is high time we all come together, along with the government, to protect our green heritage," said a local activist, Sunil Agarwal.

He added that the event organizers, Wandering Souls and Save Navi Mumbai Environment, have already got a healthy response from the people eager to participate in this run. "Those interested in registering for the 'Run For Flamingos' can WhatsApp 9820997659 / 9833157583 or email wanderingsoulsindia@gmail.com," said Agarwal.

"Navi Mumbai is blessed with a rich and green coast, lined with mangroves and several bird species are seen here. Earlier, the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) had also given a comprehensive baseline bird survey report stating that the wetlands in places like Palm Beach road and Uran must be protected so as to avoid any air accidents like bird hits at the upcoming Navi Mumbai airport. Hence, the 'Run For Flamingos' will help in this cause, and make people understand that wetlands are not wastelands," said another local activist.
