How to make your white sneakers sparkle again: The surprising $6 ingredient that will make your trainers look brand new

  • A woman from the ACT has shared her best trick for making sneakers white again
  • After trying to clean them with Sard, the Converse shoes turned a yellow colour
  • So in a last attempt she soaked them in Polident overnight - to much success
  • The denture cleaning solution helped them sparkle like new with minimal fuss

The trouble with buying white sneakers is that although they look pristine for some time, they inevitably become marred by dirt and grime.

One mother from the Australian Capital Territory was just about ready to toss her old pair of Converse away, when an idea struck.

'The first time I cleaned my Converse I used Sard and they turned horrible and yellow. After that I just didn't care what happened to them,' she explained on Facebook.

'I was about to chuck them last night when I figured I had nothing to lose and left them to soak in Polident overnight and now they are like new!'.

The images she attached showed an incredible transformation of the sneakers, with more than 1,000 social media shares from people wanting to try the same.

A box of Polident tablets are just $6.10 from Woolworths supermarket stores.

After getting a number of comments about what ratio of water to tablets she used, the mother returned to answer.

'I literally winged it with these... my sink is quite small so I filled it with hot water and dissolved six tablets, then submerged shoes and gave them a very light scrub,' she said.

'Then this morning I just rinsed with cold water and left them outside to air dry.'

'Using a "Sard Wonder Laundry Soap" bar ($2-$3) and water, scrub the soap bar all over the shoes while continuously rinsing it under cold water so the shoe becomes damp,' Chontel explained (pictured: one of her trainers after being transformed)

Queensland-based personal trainer Chontel Duncan has similarly found great success in cleaning her white trainers.

Interestingly, Sard works wonders for her.

'1. Using a "Sard Wonder Laundry Soap" bar ($2-$3) and water, scrub the soap bar all over the shoes while continuously rinsing it under cold water so the shoe becomes damp,' Chontel explained.

Make your trainers sparkle in six hours

 1. Scrub a wet soap bar all over the shoes while continuously holding it under cold water

2. Do not rinse the shoes afterwards

3. Place the wet soapy pair of shoes in direct sunlight until dry

4. Pop shoes into the washing machine on a cold cycle

5. Place the shoe back in direct sunlight

The second step is one that might surprise gym bunnies: 'Do not rinse the shoes'.

Her third step is that you should 'place the wet soapy pair of shoes in direct sun until dry (it only took two hours to dry where I live),' she said.

'4. Pop shoes into the washing machine on a cold cycle (you can add your regular washing powder to it if you like).'

Step five is that you should pop the shoe 'back in direct sunlight to dry'.
