HYDERABAD: The State Election Commission (SEC) ordered repoll in three wards after the first phase gram panchayats (GP) polls was held across the state on Monday. The repoll will be held on January 25 in two wards and on January 30 in the third ward.

The repoll became necessary in the three wards due to reasons like more symbols on the ballot paper than contesting candidates and tender votes. In Jayashankar-Bhoopalapally district, some villagers boycotted polling, protesting against not elevating their village as GP by the government.

The first phase of election was to be held for 4,479 panchayats, but as sarpanch and ward member election was unanimous in 769 GPs and court cases in nine panchayats, polling was held for 3,701 GPs. The voter turnout was 85.76%, more than the assembly elections. In Yadadri-Bhongiri, Ranga Reddy, Suryapet, Nalgonda, Medak, Warangal Rural and Siddipet districts, the turnout was over 90%. Yadadri district logged a whopping 95% voter tur nout.

The SEC declared that except stray incidents in Bhadradri-Kothegudem and Jayashankar districts, the polling was peaceful. SEC secretary M Ashok Kumar said in ward number 3 of Bachannapet GP in Janagaon, the election authorities noticed six symbols and NOTA instead of five symbols and NOTA. By then, 77 votes were polled. The repoll in the ward would be held on January 30.

In ward 8 of Somanpally panchayat in Peddapalli district, instead of Uppleti Yellaiah s/o Gundiaiah, another person, Uppleti Yellaiah s/o Pochaiah, cast a vote even though his name was not registered in the electoral rolls. Of 88 votes, 75 votes were already polled by the time authorities noticed it. The repoll in the ward would be held on January 25.

In ward 2 of Munjalakunta T Thanda in Warangal district, Banothu Badru went to cast his vote, but by then someone had already cast his vote. The presiding officer said Badru was a genuine voter. Of 36 voters, 33 had already cast their votes by then. Repoll would be held on January 25.
