The 2019 Lok Sabha polls will be a war between Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party and the people who have suffered a lot over the past four years owing to his ‘anti-people, pro-rich policies,’ CPI (M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury has said.

“It is not the leaders of political parties joining hands to take you (Mr. Modi) on in the ensuing polls... It is the people, who have suffered a lot over the past four years, have pushed the Opposition parties to take you on unitedly in the 2019 Parliamentary polls. So you’ll be on one side and the people will be on the other in the Lok Sabha polls,” Mr. Yechury said after unveiling 12-feet-tall statue of revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin on the CPI (M)’s district office premises here on Tuesday.

He said the policies of the Narendra Modi government that allowed wealth of the riches and the super riches to swell menacingly ever since he came to power had led to the looting over ₹12 lakh crore from the banks by a few who fled the country. At the same time, the miseries of the poor and the working class, who could not even lead an ordinary life, got magnified.

“Mr. Modi’s close friend Mehul Choksi, who had fled to Antigua after looting thousands of crores of rupees from Indian banks, had surrendered his Indian passport and he cannot be prosecuted now as he is no more an Indian citizen,” Mr. Yechury charged.

He said capitalism, which would not collapse on its own, should be brought down only through people’s unity and intense struggle, which had started happening all over the world, including the capitalistic countries like the United States, France, Germany, Italy etc.

The CPI-M leader said Mr. Modi, who miserably failed to keep the poll promises he had given in 2014, would come out with a series of new promises in a bid to lure the votes and make all-out efforts to make new electoral allies. In Tamil Nadu, the ruling AIADMK should also be defeated as it would be an ally of the BJP in the Lok Sabha polls.
