The drive is a 10-day-long move from the City police

The Thiruvananthapuram city police will mobilise its entire force across various enforcement wings during the next 10 days as part of Operation Cobra, a city-wide drive to crackdown on offences of various nature.

Conceived by the District Police Chief (Thiruvananthapuram city) S. Surendran, the drive will involve the simultaneous deployment of all wings including traffic police, city police control room, shadow police, and special branch, besides the local police stations.

The campaign

Aimed primarily at ensuring law and order as well as public safety, the campaign will also focus on reining in anti-social activities, drug proliferation among students, and traffic offences.

During the course of Operation Cobra, the police will constantly survey habitual offenders and maintain their details at police stations.

Special squads will also be constituted to apprehend those absconding to evade arrest in criminal cases.

Stringent provisions including those pertaining to the Kerala Anti-social Activities Prevention Act (KAAPA) will be imposed on them, if the need arose.

Buildings, flats and other houses that have remained virtually abandoned for long and have become safe havens for anti-social elements will be brought under surveillance.

Efforts will also be to bring tourists under the special security scheme in order to protect them from falling prey to the designs of criminal gangs that operated at tourist destinations.

Besides, the safety of people visiting the city from other States will also be brought under the ambit of the enforcement programme.

Other aspects

Other aspects of the drive will include identifying youngsters addicted to intoxicants and providing them necessary assistance to shed their use of such products, prevent eve-teasing especially in public areas and transit points including bus stands, reining in speeding and rash driving, drunken driving, and other traffic violations.

Steps will be initiated to prevent traffic snarls and illegal parking at undesignated spots.
