Sabarimala: KSRTC records 3-fold increase in revenue

Thiruvananthapuram: Though Travancore Devaswom Board experienced a sharp decline in its revenue during the recently-concluded Sabarimala season, KSRTC has registered a significant increase in collection from Pamba service. The revenue collection of KSRTC increased by three fold during the Sabarimala season 2018-19.
KSRTC received a collection of Rs 45.2 crore during the Sabarimala season from November 16, 2018 to January 20, 2019, while the collection during the corresponding period the previous season was only Rs 15.2 crore.
The lion’s share of this year’s revenue is from Pamba-Nilackal service. The corporation mobilized Rs 31.2 crore from this route alone. The decision of high court to provide monopoly to KSRTC in the route and preventing private vehicles from proceeding towards Pamba from Nilackal came to the advantage of the corporation. Revenue from long-distance buses stood at Rs 14 crore.
According to KSRTC, AC buses were much in demand during the pilgrimage season. As many as 99 non-AC buses, 44 AC buses, 10 electric AC buses were operated on Pamba-Nilackal route as chain services.
A total of 70 buses were operated on long-distance route to other depots, which was increased to 1,000 buses during Makaravilakku festival.
“It was the QR code-based ticketing system, which was able to operate services based on demand that led to the hike in revenue. As it was linked with the virtual queue system of police department, the total number of pilgrims travelling at a time could be known and accordingly buses were arranged,” said a statement from KSRTC.
With the online ticketing system, the buses were operated without conductors which too helped increase the revenue.
The bus services of transport corporation of Tamil Nadu, which were given permit to operate special services to Sabarimala towards the end of pilgrimage season, did not seem to have any impact on the revenue collection of KSRTC.
“The revenue collection is the blessing from Lord Ayyapa to KSRTC, which is trying to recover from financial crisis,” said KSRTC chairman and managing director Tomin J Thachankary.
