Camp to treat fractured limbs of cattle

Pune: The State Animal Husbandry Department along  with Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) has organised a three-day health camp to treat limb fractures in cattle.The camp will be held from January 22 to January 25 at the District veterinary polyclinic in Aundh. Speaking about the initiative, Dr Anil Deshpande, Assistant Commissioner at Animal Husbandry department said that the camp is mainly for cattle, but they are also prepared to treat pets like dogs and cats.

“The main aim to hold the camp is to help farmers. Many times, it is found the animals meet with accidents causing injury to their limbs.If not treated in time, it causes infections, which can be fatal,” added Deshpande.

The assistant commissioner said that 20 expert veterinary doctors will treat the animals. “These 20 veterinary doctors will get hands-on training in the camp, which will help them further to work in remote areas. We will use methods of external fixation and use of cast application to name a few. The X-ray and fasting of animals would take a day and so people are expected to wait for a day to treat the injured animals,” added Deshpande.

Dr HP Aithal, Principal Scientist at IVRI and Dr Anil Deshpande will be the coordinators of the programme.
