Left, Jana Sena to highlight issues at public meet in Krishna Lanka today

A 10 MGD water treatment facility that catered to the drinking water needs of the Patamata and Patamata Lanka areas was shut down over three years back for repairs with residents still waiting for its revival. A promise to construct a retaining wall to protect the nearly 20,000 families residing on the banks of River Krishna has not been met so far.

The Praja Bheri, a public meeting proposed to be held jointly by the Left parties and the Jana Sena Party at the Satyam Hotel Centre in Krishna Lanka on Monday evening, will highlight issues plaguing the Vijayawada East constituency.

CPI city secretary Donepudi Sankar said people should reject the TDP which had ‘failed to solve their problems in the last four years’. He said new political alternatives were emerging and people should make the best of them.

“Development has gone for a toss with both civic authorities and politicians focussing on power. We want the government to take up comprehensive development of this constituency reeling under a prolonged neglect,” CPI(M)’s West constituency secretariat member Donepudi Kasinadh told the media here.

‘Forgotten promises’

Distribution of house site pattas to people living on hill slopes and construction of houses for the poor were also some of the forgotten promises made by the TDP, he said. There was a need to construct subways connecting Krishna Lanka National Highway, declare a special development package for residents living on hill slopes and ensure protection to the poor living along canal bunds. Waiver of the interest on loans availed by the poor from cooperative banks and development of the industrial pockets in Autonagar was what the Left and JSP leaders were insisting on.

Jana Sena’s Vasu demanded that the civic authorities revoke the decision to shift the responsibility of garbage maintenance on apartment-dwellers in city.
