NEW DELHI: Union finance minister Arun Jaitley on Monday said that the proposed "Mahagathbandhan" is riven by contradictions, while claiming that the conclave on Saturday was as much an anti-Narendra Modi show as a non-Rahul Gandhi rally.
Jaitley claimed that the opposition parties recognised Modi's credibility remained high and, therefore, are seeking to pool their numbers so that they could get the better of BJP in LS polls. He said the approach is bound to fail because of contradictions among the alliance partners and because of their negativism.
"On the surface, the Kolkata rally was an anti-Modi rally. More significantly, it was also a non-Rahul Gandhi rally. Opposition politics has thrown up four desirous PMs. Besides Mamata, the other three-Rahul Gandhi, Mayawati and KCR were significantly absent in Kolkata," he said.
Emphasising that 2/3rd of those on the stage were those who in the past had worked with BJP, the finance minister said: "There was not a single speech reflecting the positives which the leaders proposed for the future."
Jaitley said that in 1971, Indira Gandhi succeeded against similar challenge of a joint opposition and that 1971 will be repeated in 2019 as it is going to be a choice between "Modi versus an unviable and unworkable short-lived combination, between him and chaos?"
