BHUBANESWAR: Ten years of close friendship between two women ended in a tragic note with the one killing the other friend in Gouri Nagar area here on Sunday. Shree Lingaraj police arrested Amisha Mitra, 36 for allegedly slashing the throat of Alakananda Das, 31, her roommate, leading to her death in their rented house.
Police sources said fissure appeared in their friendship only a few weeks ago when Mitra came to know about Das’s marriage plan. Das, who worked in the operation wing of a private firm, was supposed to be engaged in the next few days. Police said Mitra, who works in an NGO, did not want Das to desert her.
“Our prima facie probe indicated that the accused was upset over the imminent separation from her close friend, who was supposed to get married. Mitra had been insisting Das stay with her in the rented house. When Das told her that she had to move out and stay with her husband after marriage, Mitra became angry. In a fit of rage, she attacked Das with a knife and slit her throat,” deputy commissioner of police Anup Kumar Sahoo told TOI.
Police sources said Mitra had been insisting Das turn down the marriage proposal so that both the women could stay together. House owner Gyanaranjan Mishra said he had heard some noise from the room of the two women a few days ago. Mishra said he again heard the commotion around 2 am on Sunday. The noise was so loud that he had to rush to their room and found Das in a pool of blood. Mitra was present near the body. “I immediately called up the police. Police reached my home within 10 minutes and took away Mitra. Police also seized the blood-soaked knife,” Mishra said. Police said Mitra confessed to killing her.
Though Mitra’s family stays in Laxmisagar area here, she had been staying with Das in Gouri Nagar area for the last three years. They had also stayed for nearly six years in another house in Satya Nagar area before shifting to Gouri Nagar.
Das’s family members were inconsolable. “My sister was supposed to reach her hometown at Basta area in Balasore district on Saturday evening. Her engagement ceremony was supposed to be held next week,” said Debidutta Mohanty, her cousin.
