Designer Tarun Tahiliani launches a new boutique in Kolkata
The 2,200sqft store will house the designer’s ready-to-wear, occasion wear, bridal and menswear collections

After a strong presence in New Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad, couturier Tarun Tahiliani continues to mark his territory with a spacious new boutique in Kolkata. The space is spread over 2,200sqft in the city’s bustling commercial area at Park Street, and is home to the designer’s new spring/summer 2019 collection. It spans across two dedicated floors, where the ground floor is reserved for ready-to-wear and menswear collections, while the first floor is exclusive to occasion wear and bridal wear.
“Kolkata has always had the most exquisite mix of architecture and a bustling vibe of a metropolis. It’s a city where tradition has been kept alive,” says Tahiliani, talking about his new boutique’s hometown. The designer has picked a significant store location with Galleria 1910 too, as it a heritage building that resonates with Bengal’s rich history and culture. Coming to the interiors, Tahiliani has retained his signature wallpapers from his flagship stores, and has introduced elements like brass inlay and wooden dado, along with exquisite chandeliers.
When asked about the range that will be showcasing at the store, Tahiliani says, “The collection features a refreshing summer palette of soft neutrals and pastel pink, aqua, mint, ivory, and small hints of jewel tones. In terms of fabrics, we used all our classic crinkles, muslins, foils, beautiful cut works and a lot of embroideries, that gives a cool Indo-Egyptian freshness.”
Considering Bengal is renowned for its handloom cotton saris in white and red, would that be on offer in the new spring/summer collection too? “While the collection does not include any Bengal-inspired motifs, it does reference the typical Bengali sari, which comes with a big border. But instead of a red or black border on an ivory base, we have an Egyptian gold border with the simple graphicness of the Bengal sari,” says Tahiliani. “In times to come, there will be more of Bengali influences, but our collections are always synthesising and never go into one particular region, even though we might be inspired by it,” he adds.
