Police 'furious' over suspicious Bribie Island fire

Police were "furious" to discover the bushfire that raged at Bribie Island during the weekend may have been deliberatly lit.

“From disruption to the community, the destruction of habitat and substantial cost to the community for the emergency response – it was a difficult weekend for those of us on the island,” Bribie Island's Officer in Charge Peter Thompson said.

“It makes me furious to think that someone may have deliberately lit this fire – particularly in these hot conditions – and put our properties, wildlife, pets and lives at risk."

A police spokesman said at least one kangaroo had to be euthanised after it was severely burnt in the blaze. Several other animals were also put down by police.

Firefighters were alerted of the bushfire burning at Bellara shortly after midday Thursday.

Warm northerly winds fanned the fire which spread through the national park.

On Friday, the fire came close to Banksia Beach State School and the Community Arts Centre.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services incident controller Graham Quinn said crews worked tirelessly over the weekend to bring the fire under control, and it was a fantastic result no properties or local assets were lost.

“We’d also like to thank the community for their support, generosity and understanding during the incident,” Mr Quinn said.

Police investigated several reports of unusual fire spotting and members of the public placing themselves at risk by entering the fire ground.

Senior Sergeant Peter Thompson said investigations were continuing.

“I am asking anyone who may have been anything suspicious in the Bellara or Banksia Beach areas from Friday and through the weekend to contact police.”
