Flyover built but snarls clog this 2km MG Road stretch

A flyover has been built on the stretch of MG Road from Sukhrali to Sector 16 (an important industrial hub in the city) but it does not seem to have eased the traffic jams on the road during peak hours.
A two-kilometre stretch of MG Road, where traffic jams are frequent, sees two major bottelenecks — one near Ginger Hotel on the roadside and another where the road intersects Sector 14.
Both residents and commuters blame illegal parking and bad condition of the road for traffic jams, which have become a regular affair on the stretch.
In 2016, the road was widened for construction of the flyover from Sukhrali to Sector 16 but according to commuters, it has not resolved their issues as illegal parking along the road continues and makes a part of the road inaccessible to vehicles.
“During peak hours, it takes 20 minutes to cross this stretch on MG Road. A flyover has been built here but it is no relief as illegal parking continues on the road,” said Lalit Pandey, who regularly commutes to IFFCO Chowk from Sector 14.
Other commuters said that the poor condition of the road was obstructing traffic movement. “The road is in a pathetic condition. There are no traffic cops on this stretch to manage traffic. I feel that there should be at least one traffic cop to ensure that the traffic flow is controlled. As a resident of Gurugram, I feel bad about having to deal with this issue every day,” said Taruna Yadav, another commuter.
Some said that the expansion of the road had not made any difference. “When the flyover was being built, the road was widened, and for that, trees around the road were removed. However, even now, illegal parking in the service lane continues. The flyover has hardly made any difference and the traffic jams are only getting worse day by day,” said Sumit Choudhary, a resident of Sector 17.
When contacted, an official with the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) said, “We have carried out several drives to remove the illegally-parked vehicles along the road. The problem is that shopkeepers park their vehicles in front of their shops, leading to traffic congestion during peak hours. However, there is a need for daily vigilance on the stretch.”
A traffic cop, meanwhile, said, “We are vigilant about the traffic situation and illegal parking on MG Road. There is a traffic chowki at Atul Kataria Chowk and traffic cops are always there on teh road. I don’t think there is a need to deploy more cops and as far as the problem of illegal parking is concerned, it can only be resolved if civic authorities provide proper parking facilities.”
