TRICHY: Two spectators were gored to death in the mega jallikattu held at Viralimalai in Pudukottai district on Sunday. At least 37 others suffered minor injuries in the event that created a world record for hosting the maximum number of bulls — 1,353.

The event saw chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, several of his ministerial colleagues and more than a lakh of people in attendance on the vast ground along the Trichy-Madurai highway.

The victims — identified as Ramu, 32, of Illupur in Pudukottai district, and Sathish Kumar, 35, of Jeeyapuram in Trichy — were gored to death by bulls coming out of the vadivasal.

While Ramu died on the way to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in Trichy, Sathish died of injuries at the Manapparai government hospital.

Flagging off the event in the morning, the chief minister said Viralimalai had now made it to the list of popular jallikattu venues like Alanganallur, Palamedu and Avaniyapuram.

A team from Worldkings – World Records Union, London, presented the certificate for the world record for the jallikattu event that lasted more than nine hours. A total of 424 bull tamers were allowed to take part in the event in a phased manner.

“The target of sending 700 bulls to beat the previous record of 647 was achieved by 3pm,” said health minister C Vijayabaskar.

Muruganandam of Trichy, the best tamer, and another Muruganandam from Rapusal in Pudukottai district, owner of an untamed bull, received a Maruti Alto 800 car each as prizes. Some 700 bicycles were also given away.
