12 lakh apply for inclusion of names in electoral rolls

HYDERABAD: Around 12 lakh new voters have applied for including their names in the electoral rolls in Telangana since the Legislative Assembly polls as the Election Commission of India has started preparatory work for Loksabha polls.
Chief Electoral Office revealed that a total of 14 lakh claims and objections were received from November 2018 to till date. Around 1611 NRI voters have applied for enrollment. Election Commission is working on a various angle to ensure that the votes will not go missing as that happened in 2018 December Assembly polls.
Telangana Chief Electoral officer Dr Rajat Kumar told TOI, ”We are working on reviewing the manpower based on their performance in the assembly polls. In the electoral roll work, we have already accepted 4.5 lakh claims and around 9.3 lakh are pending in the process out of around 14 lakh claims and objections. We have asked ECI for extending the date for claims and objections till February 4 and awaiting the reply,”
Around 38309 have applied for deleting their votes as they have permanently shifted.
EVM’s shall not be opened before 26 January as the time of filing petition regarding any election issues has to be filed before January 25 in the courts. After January 26 officials will start working on the EVMs.
Regarding election-related cases including cash seizure out of 1932 cases booked during Telangana Assembly polls courts convicted accused in 55 cases. However, majority number 1567 are pending for investigation with the cops.
The two major cases of Rs 51 lakh cash seizure with theTRS candidate P Narendra reddy in Kodangal by Income Tax department and seizure of cash of Rs 5.8 crore with hawala operators suspected to be of Mahakutami candidate Nama Nageswar Rao, Vaddiraju Ravichandra and Konda Murali are still under investigation. Cops failed to track the ultimate source of the money.
Meanwhile, Excise department principal secretary Somesh Kumar, Hyderabad commissioner of Police Anjani Kumar, Additional Chief Electoral Officer Buddha Prakash, GHMC Commission Dana Kishore, Joint CEO Amrapali Katta, Adilabad collector D Divya, Bhupalapalli collector Dr V Venkaeswari were given awards for best electoral practices for Telangana assembly polls.
