Man drowns near Melbourne's popular Brighton beach

A man has drowned near Melbourne's popular Brighton beach.

Emergency services were called to a location just south of Brighton beach, in the city's south-east, after the man was found face down in the water about 9.40am on Monday morning.

Water police retrieved the man but he was unable to be revived.

He is yet to be identified. Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

It comes just 24 hours after a man died while scuba diving with friends off a beach in Kilcunda, a coastal town in Victoria's south-east.

Police believe the man was scuba diving with a group off Kilcunda beach.

Witnesses became aware the man was struggling around 10.50am on Sunday morning and called emergency services.

He was winched from the water by air ambulance and attempts were made at the scene to resuscitate him, however, he was unable to be revived.

Lifesaving Victoria says 18 people have drowned across the state since December 1.

On Christmas Eve, a woman lost her husband and adult son in a drowning accident along the notoriously dangerous strip of beach next to the Colonnades on Phillip Island.

Charan Verma, 45, and 20-year-old son Rahul were declared dead after being pulled from the water. Her 11-year-old son was able to swim to shore and sustained minor injuries.

On Christmas Day a 64-year-old diver drowned off the rocks at Cape Schanck on the Mornington Peninsula.

On Boxing Day, New Zealand tourist Harmanjot Walia died while swimming at Mackenzie Falls in the Grampians.
