Municipality plans to open 10 shops by next month-end with NULM support

In a bid to provide quality food at reasonable rates, the Alappuzha municipality has started setting up wayside eateries. According to officials, the civic body plans to open 10 eateries by the end of February. The project is being implemented with the support of the National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM).

First eatery

The first eatery, named ‘Edaneram’, was opened near the Aryad South village office the other day. It is serving breakfast, biryani, lunch, tea and snacks. “The municipality will open nine more units in different places in the coming days. The eateries are being set up with the help of the Kudumbashree Mission, the nodal agency for NULM schemes,” said an official here on Monday.

The eatery will be run by a 20-member Kudumbashree team. Already 200 Kudumbashree members have been given training to run the shops. “The trained members have been given uniform. All the 10 eateries will have a common menu. The food will be prepared in healthy conditions. Aside from providing food at reasonable prices, the project will generate employment to several women,” the official added.

Officials said that wayside eateries would function as takeaway counter. “Beverages and snacks will be served at the eatery, whereas people can buy other food items from the counter as parcel,” said an official.

Each Kudumbashree unit entrusted with operating the eatery has been given a loan of ₹3.5 lakh. The units will have to repay the amount in five years.

The eateries will function from 9 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. The lunch will be served at ₹25. The rate of biryani is ₹50. Tea and snacks will be provided at ₹6 and ₹7 respectively.
