VARANASI: The city is set to witness a massive gathering of non resident Indians (NRIs) from across the globe as the 15th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) begins in Varanasi on Monday. Close to 7,000 participants from 85 countries have started arriving in the holy city for the three-day event that will explore the ‘Role of Indian Diaspora in Building New India’.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mauritian PM Pravind Jugunauth will officially inaugurate the summit on Tuesday while President Ram Nath Kovind will preside over the closing ceremony.
The event will start on Monday with the Youth PBD and Uttar Pradesh State PBD. The event will be jointly inaugurated by minister for external affairs Sushma Swaraj and Union minister of state (independent charge) for youth affairs and sports Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath will also address the guests.
Norway MP Himanshu Gulati and New Zealand MP Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi will also address the participants who will spend the afternoon at Banaras Hindu University where they will interact with students.
This is the first time that PBD is being held in Uttar Pradesh since its inception in 2003. With less than three months left for Lok Sabha elections, the event being held in PM Narendra Modi’s constituency acquires huge importance for BJP government. The event is an opportunity to promote UP as an investment hub and invite NRIs to invest in the state, besides highlighting the work by the Union and state governments.
There were several requests for on spot registrations but MEA decided to close registration on Sunday due to limited facilities.
