A roundtable on the protection of human rights organised by the Civil Liberties Committee on Sunday took objection to the alleged high-handed behaviour of two MLAs from the ruling TDP and police personnel in the district.
Two women whose land was acquired along with that of many others four months ago for construction of 18,000 NTR Housing units at Tumparthi and Motumarla villages on the outskirts of Dharmavaram town levelled serious allegations against Dharmavaram MLA Gonuguntla Suryanarayana (popularly known as Vardapuram Suri).

A video purporting to show the Dharmavaram MLA behaving in a rude manner had gone viral on social media.
Civil Liberties Committee district president Harnath Reddy and district secretary took strong objection to the alleged high-handed behaviour of the MLA and told the meeting that they would collectively submit a memorandum to the District Collector and Superintendent of Police.
Another video purporting to be that of Guntakal MLA R. Jithendra Goud was also referred to at the meeting by the speakers who denounced his behaviour towards police officers.
Against ‘house arrests’
Communist Party of India (Marxist) district secretary V. Rambhupal took strong objection to the police officials not allowing them to hold dharnas or protests for demanding justice and said the ‘house arrest’ culture should be stopped forthwith as it was illegal.
YSR Congress Party MLC Vennapoosa Gopal Reddy accused the ruling Telugu Desam Party of trying to stifle the voice of opposition parties by not allowing them to hold protests or dharnas in the State.
