BHUBANESWAR: Smoke billowing from a coach of New Delhi-Bhubaneswar Rajdhani Express via Sambalpur (20818) near Rourkela created scare among passengers on Monday. It happened inside B-7 coach of the premium train due to short circuit.

Passengers in the coach saw the smoke coming out of the electric panel board at around 11.45am. They immediately informed the railway employees present over there. Some of the passengers got scared after witnessing smoke filled in the coach and pulled the chain to stop the train.

The technician and other staff rushed to the spot and tried to stop the smoke. Train was stopped near Tilaknagar before Rourkela station. After they fixed the problem, the train reached Rourkela for inspection. Nobody was injured in the incident, East Coast Railway (ECoR) sources said.

“When we saw smoke filled in the coach, one of the passengers immediately pulled the chain to stop the train. We thought something big accident may happen, but fortunately it was controlled,” said Sipun Mishra, a passenger.

Some passengers sat in the affected 3AC coach and some others moved to other coaches. Technicians and electricians repaired the electric circuit of the AC and electric panels. The train left Rourkela at 2.14pm. It was running around one hour late.

The incident happened under the jurisdiction of South Eastern Railway (SER). “It is not a case of fire, but just smoke generated due to short-circuit in electric panel board in the B-7 coach,” said Sanjoy Ghosh, SER’s chief public relations officer.

ECoR sources said one mouse entered into the panel board and it caused short-circuit. The train was checked thoroughly at Rourkela station before resuming its journey. “Some passengers remained in the coach with their willingness and some of them were shifted to other coaches,” said a statement issued by the ECoR.

The same coach was checked by the senior engineers and officials of the Railways after it reached Bhubaneswar railway station in the evening.
