Akil Wright admitted he should have broken Wrexham’s goalscoring drought in Saturday’s loss to AFC Fylde, but is confident that the Dragons can turn their current slump in form around.

Wrexham slipped to a fifth successive defeat since the turn of the New Year on Saturday, going down to a 2-0 loss at Mill Farm to drop to fifth in the National League and be overhauled by the Coaster.

The Dragons are yet to register a goal in 2019, while they were downed by two clinical finishes from Coasters winger Ash Hemmings’ on Saturday.

Wright is not known for his goalscoring prowess, the 22-year-old midfielder having found the back of the net just twice in a season-and-a-half at the Dragons, but felt he should have put the visitors ahead before Hemmings eventually broke the deadlock a minute before the interval, the winger adding a second less than 10-minutes after the restart.

“It is frustrating at the moment,” said Wright.

“Five defeats and no goals, we started brightly, very bright in the first half, I had a few chances myself, and probably should have scored.

“I thought going into the second half we should started the same as we did in the first, but then the second goal has killed us off really.

“It is disappointing, very disappointing, we’ve got a great following from the fans and it is disappointing for them as well that we are not winning games and scoring goals, but we have got to stick together and keep going and take each game as it comes and then hopefully next Saturday at home it is a different result.”

Despite their disastrous run of form the Dragons remain only four points adrift of leaders Leyton Orient in the race for the title and the solitary automatic promotion place to the Football League.

Wright suggested it was a positive that the Dragons are still well placed within the title race, but acknowledged it was a case missed opportunities.

Attention now turns to Saturday’s visit of Maidenhead in the National League, a side one place and two points above the drop zone.

When asked how Wrexham can put it right, Wright added: “Back to basics, back to how we were the first half of the season really.

“We don’t mean to lose games, we don’t mean not score, but it is not falling for us at the moment. I am sure it will, we will stick together and hopefully Saturday we can put this right.

“It feels like we need to get that first goal in the game to get us going, but we will have to put it right on Saturday.

“Obviously after a defeat it is not nice, everyone is down but once the weekend has gone we will move on.

“During the week we are all fine going into the next game, we have got to stay positive.

“Results on Saturday have been kind to us as well, which is frustrating because it was a massive game for us, but we have got to keep on going.

“It (the gap) is a positive, but disappointing at the same time, because we could be in such a better position that we are now.

“But thankfully it is not a massive gap and we can still close it. We have got to take each game as they come and I am sure we will get back to how we were.”
