Shivakumara Swami passes away: A chronology

BENGALURU: Shivakumara Swami, chief pontiff of Siddaganga Mutt, passed away in Karnataka's Tumakuru at 11.44am, aged 111, on Monday following ill health. He was being treated for lung infection and other age-related ailments for the last few months. He had been put on ventilator for the last one week on and off.

Shivakumara Swamiji, 'walking god' of Karnataka, passes away

Supercentenarian Shivakumara Swamiji, popularly known as "Nadedaduva Devaru" (Walking God) in Karnataka, passed away in Tumakuru at 11.44 am on Monday following ill health. He was 111-year old. He was being treated for lung infection and other age-related ailments for the last few months.


Here is a chronology

April 1, 1908: Shivakumara Swami is born.

1930: Completes Bachelor of Arts Degree with Physics and Mathematics as Optional Subjects.

March 3, 1930: Enters the Viraktashram order (monk’s life) and took over as the head of the mutt.

1937: Upgrades the erstwhile Sree Siddalingeshwara Sanskrit School as a Sanskrit College.

1941: Takes over as pontiff of the Siddaganga Mutt following the death of his predecessor Sree Uddana Swamiji.

1965: Is conferred with the Honorary "Doctor of Letters" degree by Karnatak University, Dharwad.

2006: Is conferred the "Karnataka Ratna" award.


2007: Karnataka government announces to institute Shivakumara Swamiji Prashasti.


April 2007: Centenary celebrated


2015: Government of India honours him with the Padma Bhushan.


January 21, 2019: Dies following ill-health.
