Coimbatore: The Saibaba Colony police have arrested three men for kidnapping a Rathinapuri-based moneylender, making an obscene video and extorting as much as 50lakh from him over a period of two-and-a-half years.
Police identified them as S Padmanaban, 42, of Anna Nagar Housing Unit at Veerakeralam, V Nagaraj, 43, of Kovilmedu and T Vishnu Kumar, 33, of Cheran Nagar in GN Mills.

They had been fleecing 51-year-old G Saravanakumar of GVC Street at Rathinapuri. “He was also the secretary of the City Co-operative Credit Society at Velandipalayam. Padmanaban, an automotive consultant, often visited the society to pledge gold ornaments. He developed a friendship with Saravanakumar, who helped him get a loan from the society. But as he failed to repay the amount, the relationship became strained,” a police officer said.

After coming to know that Saravanakumar was a wealthy moneylender, Padmanaban along with his friends Nagaraj, who was working in a co-operative ration shop and Vishunu Kumar, decided to kidnap him for a huge ransom. “Vishnu Kumar brought Karthikeyan of Podanur, Iyappan of Mooremarekt near Ganapathy and Balan of Ganapathy to help them in the operation. When Saravanakumar was passing through Saibaba Colony on July 27, 2016, the six- member gang kidnapped him in a car. They kept him at Anaikatti, where they recorded some videos of him with a woman,” the officer told TOI.

Threatening to upload the video in social networking websites, they demanded Rs 50lakh from Saravanakumar. “He gave them Rs 25lakh immediately and the gang released him. He had given them Rs 25lakh over a period of two years. But the miscreants continued to demand money. When they approached him again on January 18, Saravanakumar lodged a complaint with the Saibaba Colony police, who registered an FIR and arrested the trio. Karthikeyan and Iyappan are absconding. We suspect that the duo might have the video,” the officer said.

Balan, an accused in the case, had passed away a few months ago.
