NEW DELHI: A big international drug syndicate sourcing heroin from the Golden Triangle countries has been busted, and the white powder worth Rs 80-100 crore has been seized by Delhi Police’s Special Cell. Six people have been arrested and the hunt is on for more, police said on Monday.
The heroin was smuggled in from Myanmar and brought to West Bengal via Manipur. The contraband was then transported to Delhi and Uttar Pradesh for distribution. The six men, Mausam Ali, Chhote Khan, Sanjay, Jalil Khan, Sajid Ali and Shakir, belong to UP’s Bareilly and Badayun.
Sanjeev Yadav, CP (Special Cell), said that apart from an Ertiga car, a truck and several mobile handsets and SIM cards were seized by the cops. The content of the phones is being analysed to get information about the cartel’s network.
“Sleuths of the cell’s Northern Range were working on information that inter-state narcotic cartels were active in the states of West Bengal, UP, Punjab, Delhi, MP, etc., supplying high-grade heroin in these states. Additional information hinted at these cartels bringing in the heroin from suppliers in West Bengal who collected the raw material to prepare heroin from Myanmar,” Yadav elaborated.
The cops worked on the information after identifying some cartel members and keeping them under electronic and human surveillance for about four months.
On January 18, a team led by ACP Manoj Dixit learnt that three smugglers would be travelling to Nirankari Sarovar in north Delhi in an Ertiga with a heroin consignment. The car was intercepted and 5kg of the narcotic was recovered.
The disclosures provided by the arrested trio led to a police team being dispatched to Bareilly, where another man was arrested. On January 20, the same team led by inspectors Vivekanand Pathak and Kuldeep Singh arrested two others and seized 15 kg of heroin from a truck intercepted at Rohini.
Police disclosed that more arrests were likely as key cartel members had been identified in the interrogation of the carriers. Mausam Ali, Chhote Khan and Sanjay admitted to receiving heroin from Jalil and his associate named Mustaqim. Jalil told the cops that he received crude heroin from suppliers in Bareilly and prepare pure heroin in his secret hideouts. Sajid Ali and Shakir disclosed their involvement in trafficking for 4-5 years at the behest of one Rashid.
“They worked as carriers for Rashid and received heroin from Khan and Rajaq,” Yadav revealed. “Rashid directed them to receive the drug from Khan and Rajaq from various places in Malda, West Bengal. To avoid detection by law enforcement agencies, he concealed the heroin packets in his clothing.”
