'Don't forget Aiia': Family of student killed in Bundoora calls for memorial

The family of an international student killed in Melbourne's north has called for a permanent memorial to mark the spot where her body was discovered last week.

Hundreds of mourners gathered again outside Polaris shopping centre in Bundoora on Sunday to remember Aiia Maasarwe, who was allegedly raped and murdered in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The death has prompted an international outpouring of grief, with vigils in both Melbourne and Israel and a tram filled with floral tributes retracing her final journey on Friday night.

Ms Maasarwe's father, Saeed, told mourners on Sunday a permanent memorial would ensure his daughter was not forgotten.

“I hope you don’t forget Aiia ... You cannot take the light from anyone," he said.

Mr Maasarwe spoke about acceptance and love for all, regardless of nationality, race or religion.

"This is the message we want to send. This makes the world more beautiful."

He said the family hoped to have his daughter's body home on Monday.

"Take her home for a proper burial and funeral," he said.
