The Information Technology Department and the Tamil Nadu e-governance agency were developing an ‘app’ to exclusively monitor and address three basic issues of drinking water, roads and street lights, Minister for Information Technology M. Manikandan said.

After distributing welfare assistance to beneficiaries at a function here on Saturday, he said the app would be first introduced in Ramanathapuram Assembly constituency as a pilot project and would be extended to other Assembly constituencies in the State later.

The app would help the elected representatives, Collector and officials in the urban and rural local bodies to check and monitor the distribution of drinking water through overhead tanks, functioning of street lights and condition of roads by sitting in their offices.

Describing the killing of fisherman K Muniasamy as “inhumane and cruel” act, he said the Centre should take up the issue with Sri Lanka and ensure such incident do not recur in future.

He handed over a cheque for ₹5 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to the family members of the deceased fisherman. Asked whether the government was contemplating legal action against the Lankan navy, he said the Department of Fisheries was exploring the option and added that steps were being taken to provide another ₹ 3 lakh to the family from the Fishermen Welfare Board.
